about

Otaro is the electronic music project of Rik Adriaans, a Dutch modular synthesist and media anthropologist based in London. Having first started making electronic music with tracker software in the 1990s, he paused music production entirely in the mid-2000s only to return to it in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic. As an academic during the daytime, he combines his musical experiments with social research and can nowadays be found doing participant observation at DIY workshops and synth events across Europe.

The compositions on Diorama are all improvised on a Eurorack modular synthesizer system. They are snapshots of the emergent properties of patch cable connections, guided by the taste of the synthesist who is inspired by ambient, krautrock and early electronic music. Most of the melodies on Diorama are generated by the careful processing of random voltages and low frequency oscillators, rather than playing or programming them by hand. Once the connections are broken and the cables are unpatched, this music is gone forever—unless, as in the case of Diorama, the record button has been pushed, turning the haphazard and accidental into destiny.
