about

DAK or Deri Altı Kanalları (“Underskin Channels”) is an experimental band from Ankara which was active mainly in the 90s and early 2000s. DAK’s recordings haven’t reached many people beyond those who acquired their cd-rs and cassettes in that period, but the band’s works display an important sonic and historical uniqueness, and therefore it had become necessary to present some of these works again to music enthusiasts and archivists. The compilation “Ferrokrom” was put together to fulfill this necessity.

Deri Altı Kanalları was founded in the early 90s. Shortly after their foundation, the band entered a period where they stopped producing music for some years and started obsessively experimenting with reel-to-reel tape recorders, collecting tapes from flea markets and recording music on them from the radio. Music they captured from state radio channel TRT 3 that shaped their taste at that time include Bauhaus, Einstürzende Neubauten, Stockhausen, Can, Kraftwerk, Caucasian laments, The Fall, Joy Division, Velvet Underground, The Stooges and David Bowie. In the winter of 1999, the band had intensive improvisation sessions in their home studio, recording more than a hundred songs, using four reel-to-reel recorders as mixers and echo-makers and a fifth one as the recording tape. Some of the output was later collected in a series of albums self-distributed in very limited quantities, and some of the recorded material on tapes are still unheard even by the band members themselves. The songs recorded were mostly improvised, the way they sound being a result of different characteristics of the tape recorders, and the raw and minimalist nature of the works are partly a consequence of the technical limitations of this cumbersome recording method. Some of the songs were later re-recorded with vocals and some of these supplied music for short films.

Creating experimental music at a time when no such scene existed in Ankara, the band has played only one live show and were uninterested in operating in the well-defined parameters of the music establishment, and the band members later pursued other musical projects.

This compilation presents a selection from the 1999-2002 period. “Ferrokrom” was compiled by Işık Sarıhan with the help of band members Ceyhun Dora and Alper Tunga Demirel and released digitally in 2016 by Inverted Spectrum Records, with the aim of making this music available for more people who are supposed to hear it, and to contribute to the transmission of these idiosyncratic works into the future.

(This compilation was reissued on cassette format in 2023 by Vaykorus Tapes, limited edition of 77 copies.)
