about

Hywel Griffiths is a singer-songwriter from Aberystwyth, Wales, and a resident of Budapest, Hungary, where he has lived most of his life as an adult. Even though he has been playing and singing for many years, his unique, passionate voice had so far remained unheard except by those who came across him roaming the streets of Budapest with his guitar, and by those few, like the producer of this album, who once shared a flat with him.

Recorded in troublesome circumstances in a two-hour session in June 2017, "Budapest Tapes" is the first publicly available work of Hywel Griffiths. The six songs on the album, sung in four languages, reflect different aspects of his repertoire: "Bachgen Bach o Dincer" is a Welsh traditional song, "Dans le Port d'Amsterdam" is Hywel Griffith's take on the Jacquez Brel classic, and "A Pair of Brown Eyes" is a cover by the Irish-British punk band The Pogues. "Galilea" is an original by Hywel Griffiths, followed by "The Big Machine", a semi-improvised piece. "Orbánországa", another semi-improvised piece sung partly in Hungarian, features vocals by a friend of Griffiths who goes under the name of Zieg Shalom, and provides dark absurdist commentary on the political state of affairs in today's Hungary and the world. Inverted Spectrum Records is excited to present these recordings which attempt to offer a glimpse into one of the most colorful characters of Budapest and capture his playing and singing that would otherwise be left undocumented.
